Creating Connection in our Community: Sugarloaf CID 2024 Year in Review

The work of the Sugarloaf CID fosters collaboration and a sense of pride in our community, advancing the larger goal of establishing our district as Gwinnett’s Downtown. Below are the highlights of the work of the CID, thanks to the investments of our property owners and partners. So much of what we do relies on a strong community – let’s review what we have accomplished together this year.

Connecting our community

Bridging the two sides of I-85 was a goal of the founding board members of the Sugarloaf CID who did not want the interstate to feel like a barrier dividing our community. This year, we completed two projects to help bridge the eastern and western sides of our district:

East Side Landscaping

In February, we completed installation of landscaping on the east side of the Sugarloaf Parkway and I-85 interchange to mirror the landscaping on the west side of the interchange.

I-85 Underpass Mural

This summer, artist Krista Jones completed the Synchronicity Mural at the interchange underpass – check out our video of the installation! We also co-hosted the ribbon cutting celebration event at The Hudgens Center to recognize all the partners who made this project possible.

Sugarloaf CID Sculpture Rendering

Sugarloaf CID Sculpture Wall Progress

This fall, we installed the foundation and walls for the Gateway Monument Sculpture near the Sugarloaf Parkway interchange. The sculpture is currently in production (to be completed early next year). This piece of art will serve as a welcome at the gateway to our district.

Expanding the sense of community

Daisy Mills, Project Manager

The CID hired Daisy Mills as Project Manager to double our staff and make an even greater impact in our community.

Security Meeting

We launched a Sugarloaf-focused quarterly security meeting for businesses in our district to help foster communication and cooperation between our businesses and law enforcement officers.

Flock Safety Cameras

Our partnership with the Gwinnett Police Department utilizing Flock Safety Cameras continued to help officers catch criminals more quickly and recover property.

Outdoor Classroom

Lumber Contribution by Sugarloaf CID

The CID contributed to the purchase of lumber for the outdoor classroom at the Preston C. Williams Gateway Park, constructed by local scout, Anant Verma.

District 1 Candidate Forum

In partnership with Gateway 85 and Gwinnett Place CIDs, we hosted a District 1 Candidate Forum to promote voter education ahead of the November election.

Metro-Atlanta Redevelopment Summit

The CID co-sponsored the Metro-Atlanta Redevelopment Summit with the other Gwinnett Community Improvement Districts, held at the Maison6405 Event Center.

Celebrating our community and its achievements

Annual Property Owner Meeting

The CID hosted our property owners and other stakeholders to celebrate accomplishments and share updates at our Annual Property Owner Meeting in August.

Westin Atlanta Gwinnett

Maison6405 Event Center

Gwinnett Chamber Building

Our community celebrated the grand opening of the Westin Atlanta Gwinnett (featuring Overstory Rooftop Bar and Restaurant and SweetSong Restaurant), the redevelopment of the former Georgia Baptist Association property into the Maison6405 Event Center (to include a future boutique hotel and Turkish Hammam spa), and the large-scale renovation of the Gwinnett Chamber building.

Loop Trail

In partnership with Gwinnett County, we secured $1M in federal funding for the Loop Trail segment along Satellite Boulevard between Sugarloaf Parkway and Peachtree Ridge Park. This project will provide walking and biking access to the Gas South District and many other destinations in our community.

Gwinnett Creativity Fund Grant

We partnered with the Hudgens Center for Art & Learning to win a $32,500 Gwinnett Creativity Fund Grant (with support from Gwinnett County and Explore Gwinnett) for the Synchronicity underpass mural.
