First artistic crosswalks in Gwinnett are installed on Satellite Blvd. at Gas South District
DULUTH, Ga. (October 14, 2025) – An official ribbon-cutting for the vibrant artistic crosswalks on Satellite Blvd. at the entrance of Gas South District took place today. County officials, venue and community partners, and local leaders gathered to celebrate the project. Gwinnett Convention and Visitors Bureau and Gas South District’s Chief Executive Officer & President Stan Hall and Sugarloaf Community Improvement District Board Members led the ribbon cutting alongside representatives from Gwinnett County and the Hudgens Center for Art & Learning.
The installation marks the first-ever custom artistic crosswalk in unincorporated Gwinnett County, a creative step forward in integrating public art into community spaces. The new crosswalk was aligned with Gwinnett County’s relocation of a bus stop and installation of a new bus shelter to this crossing to facilitate transit options for residents and guests. These projects originated from a 2022 Sugarloaf Livable Centers Initiative Transit Enhancement Study, funded by the Atlanta Regional Commission.
Following a Call for Artists through the Sugarloaf CID, in partnership with the Hudgens Center for Art & Learning, a committee representing 5 local organizations reviewed over 20 artist submissions. A local artist and educator, Alexandra Sorto, was chosen to bring the project to life with her Quilt design. Sorto, a Gwinnett resident and art teacher with the Gwinnett County Public School System, has deep ties to the community and has also completed projects with the City of Suwanee, The Rooftop Bar in Sugar Hill, and Twin Cities Pizza in Suwanee. Geveko Markings provided the preformed thermoplastic material for the crosswalks, which were installed by Big Apple Services.
“Gwinnett is a place where cultures intertwine to create a vibrant community. My design draws inspiration from quilt motifs found in many cultural traditions, symbolizing how Gwinnett is a beautifully woven fabric of people, stories, and heritage. Each pattern represents a unique thread in the tapestry of our county, distinct yet interconnected, coming together to form something greater,” said artist Alexandra Sorto.
The crosswalk adds vibrancy to Satellite Blvd., improves safety and visibility for pedestrians and transit riders, and also serves as a symbolic gateway to the diverse programming and cultural experiences offered year–round at Gas South District.
“This artistic crosswalk represents more than just a safe passage. It’s a welcoming gateway to the many performances, events, and celebrations that define Gas South District. It reflects the diversity of our programming and the richness of our community. We’re grateful to our partners at Gwinnett County, Sugarloaf CID, The Creativity Fund, and the Hudgens Center for Art & Learning for making this vision possible,” said Stan Hall, CEO and President of Gwinnett Convention and Visitors Bureau and Gas South District.
Sugarloaf CID managed this project, which was jointly funded by the CID and the Gas South District. The artistic crosswalks also received a $21,000 grant from The Gwinnett Creativity Fund, which is funded by Gwinnett County and managed and administered by Explore Gwinnett. This milestone artistic installation represents the beginning of a new era of public art in Gwinnett, creating both functional and meaningful spaces that bring together culture, creativity, and community.
CID Board Chair Brand Morgan remarks, “Artistic crosswalks promote pedestrian safety, and this colorful design is in a prominent area of this busy district. This installation is another example of how the CID is partnering with the community to make the area more connected, safe, and attractive, all in one project.”
