Local Scout Constructs Outdoor Classroom in Gateway Park

As part of his Eagle Scout award, Gwinnett resident Anant Verma, along with friends and family, constructed 6 park benches and a podium installation as part of an outdoor classroom at the Preston C. Williams Gateway Park, on the Gas South District Campus. Verma planned, fundraised, managed, and constructed the project. The installation on Saturday, September 21st featured community partners from Gwinnett County and Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful and about 10 other friends and family members. For a few weekends prior to installation, Verma and his team trialed the construction of the benches in a garage to ensure the installation would go smoothly. All benches were constructed off-site. Using water from the small creek at the installation site, the group mixed concrete to use for securing the podium stake. All 6 benches are secured to the ground to ensure the classroom is usable for many years to come.

Verma states, “The outdoor classroom will be used for workshops hosted by Gwinnett County Water Resources and Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful, primarily for the Adopt-A-Stream initiative. I’m looking forward to it being utilized by the Sugarloaf and Gwinnett community!”

Sugarloaf CID contributed to the purchase of lumber for the project, and we applaud Verma’s initiative in making these improvements to benefit our community.
