Ten years ago, a group of commercial property owners in Sugarloaf recognized that a great place doesn’t happen by chance. It takes vision, partnership, and ongoing investment to create a place people want to be. They came together to voluntarily tax themselves and establish the Sugarloaf CID.
Thanks to CID property owners and our partners, we have invested over $20 million in improvements to make our community more connected, safe, and attractive. We also have many more improvements to come.
Over the last ten years, the CID investment has resulted in:
- 13 new sidewalks
- 3 intersection improvements, with more underway
- 2 phases of major roadway improvements on Sugarloaf Parkway
- 2 sets of artistic crosswalks
- 62 banners celebrating all the things to do in our community
- 35 cameras in partnership with Gwinnett PD
- 3 interchange landscaping installations
- 6 median landscaping installations
- 10 miles of right-of-way maintained
- 21,000-square-foot underpass mural
- 37-foot-tall sculpture
The Sugarloaf district started out small, but we quickly got to work on landscaping improvements and quick-fix projects, as well as securing funding for major roadway and trail improvements. That built the momentum that allowed us to convince more property owners to join. We have continually expanded our district to grow our tax base to more than seven times its initial value.
Partnerships are central to everything the CID does. Over the last decade, we’ve secured more than $6 million in grants for projects and studies and secured $25 million in SPLOST funding for CID projects, some of which are in planning and design. Stay tuned for updates on more improvements coming soon!
Thank you to our board members, commercial property owners, businesses, nonprofit partners, government partners, and everyone else who has supported our work in the community over the last ten years.
If you haven’t already, we hope you will register to join us on September 29th from 5- 7 p.m. at the Gas South Convention Center to celebrate our ten years of progress! Register here.
