With over 13,000 seats, Gas South Arena is up next in the series of renovations and new developments occurring at the Gas South District in recent years.
Recognized by Billboard Magazine as one of the top 25 venues in the world, Gas South Arena’s economic impact on Gwinnett County has exceeded $1 billion over the last 10 years. After over 23 years of events, major upgrades will keep the Gas South Arena a competitive location for hosting a multitude of events that bring over a million visitors each year.
Here is a recap of some of the recent updates to the Gas South District, representing both public, private, and combination endeavors:
- Expansion of the Convention Center to more than double the space, opened in 2021
- Renovation of the existing Convention Center, re-opened in 2023
- Creation of Preston C. Williams Gateway Park at the corner of Sugarloaf Parkway and Satellite Blvd in 2023
- Grand opening of the Westin Hotel in 2024
Based on the preliminary designs, the renovation focuses on aesthetic updates and adding new amenities, like a bar, as well as adding premium seating areas, loge seating, for small groups of people.
First-round designs from Perkins&Will show a bright interior with white/lightly colored walls and flooring, which coordinates with the updated Convention Center style.
However, the renovation features practical updates to the flow of events, too. Adding a permanent security screening area outside the arena and maximizing the atrium space upon entry will ensure a smoother flow of people who can quickly enter, gather, and exit the Arena.
The Gas South District attracts visitors from all over the United States for conventions, concerts, sporting events,
and the performing arts. Renovations would occur in phases to minimize disruption to events, which will continue in the arena throughout the upgrades.
